How to climb as a Mid Laner

In League of Legends, Mid lane is a very important role. As a midlaner you have to take control over the lane, river and at the same time you should properly move on the map and play around your jungler. My name is Vezzix👋  and I’m Mid lane main since season 5 with huge knowledge. In this article, I will present you 10 macro and micro tips that will show you how to climb as a Mid laner in season 10.

1 – Choose your role

In my opinion, Midlane is the most impactful role in the game and the hardest one but simultaneously climbing as a Mid laner is pretty easy if u know how to play. You have to be good at micro and macro, so your mechanics and knowledge about game should be on the highest level. Also, you should properly move on the map, play around ally jungler and objectives. You will find out everything in this guide. Let’s start from scratch:

In League of Legends can be distinguished few types of Mid laners:

  • Mages – Syndra, Orianna, Viktor
  • Assassins – Zed, LeBlanc, Talon
  • Scaling – Vladimir, Ryze, Kassadin

Also, Mid lane champions are divided into:

  • Splitpushers – Irelia, Zed, Ryze
  • Teamfigthers – Orianna, Syndra, Viktor

But you have to know that you should play on sidelane with every Midlaner – Why? I’ll tell you in the further part of this article.

2 – Play around your wards

Always when you are in base and you have 75 gold left don’t forget to buy a control ward. This small thing can save your life and gives you a lot of information about enemies. “I bought the control ward, what next?”. Let me explain to you how to place it correctly.

First of all, when you placed a trinket or control ward close to your lane you have to play around it. Never place the trinket/control ward and then play on the other side in relation to ward.

Secondly, if you want to roam at first clear opponents’ vision, place the control ward in “pixel bush” at the river, and then you can try a gank.

Thirdly, remember that when you are winning you have to place wards deeper (in enemy jungle) and in case you are losing, closer to your base. In the situation you placed a deep ward while you are losing, enemies will clear the vision and you will waste 75 gold or trinket ward for nothing.

3 – Ignite, teleport or maybe exhaust?

Choosing a good summoner spell is important to climb as a Midlaner because you can find out your best playstyle.

Ignite is a good choice when you want to dominate during laning phase and is much simpler to use than teleport. Also, you should consider it when you take assassins or burst damage champions. In this case, ignite is better than teleport.

Exhaust is perfect option versus assassins or champions that rely on quick combo. With exhaust you can easily block some damage and survive.

Teleport because of its versatility is definitely a better spell than ignite. A single teleport can win the game if it is used at the right time. However, this usually requires understanding the map, macro play, wave management and the team’s appropriate response to the teleport. NOTE: Remember that teleport has variety cooldown and in early game is the longest.

I recommend taking Ignite:

  • Beginners and players on low Silver / Gold divisions
  • In the case of the Lane Bully champion type: LeBlanc / Zed
  • When you want to dominate the early game

I recommend taking Exhaust:

  • You have to survive combo versus assassin champion

I recommend taking Teleport:

  • Any Mid laner with a weak matchup
  • Experienced Mid laners who thoroughly understand a number of dependencies associated with the use of TP
  • A champion created for Split push

4 – Wave management

Wave management is the key to win lane. You have to focus on controlling minions since the first wave arrives. This tip is very important to climb up so pay attention now.

Freeze – when you are winning or losing lane you can apply “freeze”. In the case you are winning, usually you do that for zoning (zoning is the method to distract opponent in csing) or to simplify gank for ally jungler. In the case you are even or losing in the lane, you do that principally for easier farming minions (because tower won’t hinder) and also to setup gank for the jungler.

Recall – the best moment to recall is when you pushed the minions and cannon wave is arriving because you have as much time as possible to go back so you won’t lose many cs cause outpushing cannon wave is harder than wave with 6 small minions.

Push – in the situation, your jungler is invading enemy jungle you should be ready to help him so you have to push the lane and then you can easily roam if it’s necessary without losing cs. Also, pushing is a good option to make pressure at a map because you can leave your lane and for example place ward at the river or try a gank.

5 – Roaming

As a midlaner you have to know when and how to roam. Obviously in League of Legends are better and worse champions for roaming but trust me every single champion is at least decent to do that. The best champions to roam are assassins.

How to roam:

  • Before roaming push wave under enemy tower
  • Make sure that enemy team can’t see you while you are roaming
  • Don’t hesitate and look at the map to decide where to go

When to roam:

  • Enemy toplane/botlane is pushing
  • Your teammate is pushing so you can dive
  • Ally jungler is invading

6 – Use autoattacks!

A lot of Mid lane players forget to use autoattacks on enemies and it’s a terrific mistake. Pay more attention to use autoattacks on enemy Midlaner (especially in early game) because they deal huge damage. You will see rapid improvement if you’re gonna follow this tip.

This tip works better for range aa champions than melee.

NOTE: Don’t use autoattacks on champion in large amount of enemy minions.

7 – Try to get level 2 first

In every single game you should pay attention to early stages of the game. Advantage from getting level 2 first is enormous provided that you can use that in a correct way. Climbing will be a formality.

You have to know that on solo lanes you get level 2 after:

One whole wave + 1 melee minion or 2 range minions.

So, that means getting level up first and poking enemy while he’s still level 1 gives you a huge advantage. The reason for this is that you have better basic stats, more hp, and another skill after the level up.

8 – Ward in 1:15 at raptors

People are asking me, “how to climb up as a Mid laner?” and I always answer them that they should focus on a snowball. Keep in mind that early game is crucial for the rest of the game. Snowball exists in every single soloQ and you can die in the early stage of the game because enemy jungler decided to gank your lane but you can prevent it with 1:15 ward at enemy raptors. How it works?

If you are warding enemy raptors in 1:15 you can’t get caught because opponents are already back on their lanes or pulling blue/red buff. Also, it’s not too late to do that and you get a lot of information from the ward.

1:15 ward at enemy raptors gives you:

  • knowledge where is enemy jungler, on which side (top/bot)
  • information about his pathing (one camp in jungle = 4 cs)
  • enemy junglers path direction after raptors

9 – Play on sidelane

How to climb up as a Mid laner – laning phase is finished, but the game still lasts. You are asking yourself, “what should I do now?”. In most cases as a midlaner you should stay on sidelane which means bot lane or top lane. Why?

  • You get more experience and gold cause you are not sharing it with someone else
  • The pressure on sidelanes is important and helpful for your team, especially if you play assassin
  • When botlane destroyed first bottom tower, they should stay at mid lane to take mid towers and open a map, so you have to swap with them (ARAM is never a good option!!!)

NOTE: Don’t go bot lane if baron is up and you don’t have teleport!

10 – Use chat and pings!

Don’t forget to use the chat in-game. Communication is the key to win so always remember to type/ping if someone used flash or ultimate. As a midlaner you have to be the unit with ally jungler. For example, you need to go back so it’s better to ping him to be careful because you have no priority on Mid lane.

NOTE: Remember to play with timestamps enabled so if someone flashed just add +5 mins to ping time (example: Orianna flashed in 10:50, you type in a chat “Orianna no flash 15:50”)

These were 10 basic tips that should outline your way to rank up at the Mid lane! For those who want to go to a much higher level, I invite you to personal 👉 Coaching 👈 . I will be happy to show you how to climb up as a Mid laner!
